I want to create three square shapes like the logo of BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and put a letter into each box. The letters correspond to the name of my company – "Technical Communication – Europa" – TCE for short. Besides I want to add a shape of a globe to show that my company provides my services globally. Below the boxes there will be my URL address – www.tc-europa.com and my slogan – "We Write. You Win." So, let's get started!

I choose Object > New Image from the "Object" drop-down menu on the toolbar. A "New Object" dialog box opens:

Now I can edit the first element of my logo – the box. I can adjust its width and height by toggling the "Width/Height" slider. Note all changes are reflected immediately on the canvas. Keep on adjusting till you see the box you need. Now I choose the color of the box – solid black. I can also rotate or flip the box and even select a new shape from the "Select Shape From Library.." dialog but it's not included in my outline and I keep these settings as they are. Click "OK".

My logo has three similar boxes. I need to create two more boxes. The simplest way is to make a copy of the current box and paste them onto the canvas.

I choose Object > Duplicate Object from the "Object" drop-down menu on the toolbar. A duplicate object is added to the canvas. I repeat this operation again. Now I have three boxes on the canvas. I arrange them using the mouse and the grid. The result looks like this:

Now I should put three capital letters – T, C, E into the boxes.

I choose Object / New Text from the "Object" drop-down menu on the toolbar. A "New text" dialog box opens:

The letter is displayed on the canvas. I repeat the operation until I have three letters in the boxes like below:

Think about Facebook, Twitter, or any brand for a moment. What's the first thing that comes into your mind related to them? Their logo. A logo is significant for a brand. It's how people remember and recall your brand.

Typically, a logo should be made from a professional designer. But if your resources are limited and you are a good designer yourself, you can try the tools available to you. No. We aren't talking about Photoshop or GIMP. You can create a logo in the preinstalled paint app of your Windows 10 system. The new paint app, known as Paint 3D is an upgraded version of MS Paint.

If you are wondering, how's that possible? Well, fasten your seat belts as will tell you how to create a logo on your Windows 10 system using the Paint 3D app.

Create Logo in Paint 3D

Here's what you need to do.

Step 1: Launch the Paint 3D app on your PC and click on the New button on the welcome screen. Alternatively, click on the Menu option and select New from it.

Step 2: On a blank canvas, draw your logo design. Now it's up to your creativity to utilize the tools provided by Paint 3D to draw a logo.

Here are some of the tools at your disposal:

2D Shapes

Paint 3D offers several elements (lines and curves) to draw shapes of your choice. You can even choose from the given set of shapes such as a circle, rectangle, arrow, etc.

To add a 2D shape, click on the 2D shapes option at the top and draw or select a shape from the right side.

The problem with 2D shapes is that once you are done editing the element, you cannot edit it further or change its position. That is where 3D shapes come to help.

3D Shapes

3D shapes not only let you edit the elements anytime but give a realistic touch too. To add such objects, click on the 3D shapes at the top and select the shape of your choice. You can draw your shape using 3D doodles also. Take the help of the drop-down box on the right side to add an effect to the object.

You can even combine 2D and 3D shapes or add a 2D shape onto a 3D object. Just as I told you before, it all depends on what you want from your logo.

How to Create Animated GIF in Paint 3D

Stickers

I like Paint 3D stickers. That's because these stickers attach themselves to the 3D objects automatically. Thanks to that, your logo gets more depth. To add a sticker, click on the Stickers option at the top and select a sticker. You can even add custom stickers from your laptop (more on that below in the bonus tip segment).

Once you have selected your sticker, draw it over the 3D shape. Then adjust it according to your wish. For instance, in the following image, I have used the sun sticker and added it to the 3D shape.

Add Text

Similar to 2D and 3D shapes, you can add 2D and 3D text. All the properties of 3D shapes hold true for 3D text too. That is, you can change its angle, depth, fit sticker to it, and edit it any time.

Step 3: Once the final design of your logo is ready, click on the Crop icon at the top and remove the extra areas using the dotted box.

Step 4: Click on the Menu option at the top and select Save as from it followed by choosing Image format.

Step 5: This step is very important. If you don't follow it, your logo will have a white background. So to make the image transparent, check the box next to Transparency.

However, we aren't done yet. Saving it in a format that retains the transparency is also necessary. For that, we use the PNG format, which is different from other image formats such as JPG as it keeps the transparency alive. To save the logo as PNG, select PNG (image) from the drop-down box present under Save as type.

Step 6: Lastly, hit the Save button and choose the folder where you want to save your logo.

Bonus Tip: Add Custom Stickers

You can add custom stickers in Paint 3D in two ways — create from an existing image or load a sticker from your PC.

Create a Sticker from an Image

If you like some part of an image and want it as your sticker, open that image in Paint 3D. Then highlight the section using the Select tool. Click on the Make Sticker on the right side.

When using the above method, the sticker will have the image background too. You can remove background from an image first in Paint 3D and then convert it into a sticker.

Once you click on the Make sticker, open the image where you want to add the sticker. Then click on the Stickers at the top and hit the right-most icon under it on the right side. Here you will find all your custom stickers.

Add Sticker from PC

If you already have a sticker on your PC, simply click on Stickers present in the top bar. Then click on the right-most icon and hit Add Sticker option. Navigate to the image that you want to load as a sticker.

Chrome warned me that the file could be malicious and prompted to 'discard' it, but because I had anti-virus and anti-malware installed on my computer, and active, with which I was going to scan it, I choose to keep it. Lo and behold my anti-malware program found 'PUP.Optional.somoto.A' malware hidden inside! The word "Optional" seems like it might be the typical [safe for smart people who peruse the installation carefully] Open Candy, right? Nooooo, Wrooooong! this particular malware is known for downloading Trojans even more powerful and dangerous than itself, and in the process, slowing down your computer, and corrupting your files!

Do yourself a favor. If you don't want to have to reinstall your operation system because of corruption and total compromise, DON'T download nor install this file (paid or unpaid versions alike)! EOS!

A logo is not your brand, nor is it your identity. Logo design, identity design and branding all have different roles, that together, form a perceived image for a business or product.

There has been some recent discussion on the web about this topic, about your logo not being your brand. Although this may be true, I haven't seen any clarification of the differences between 'brand', 'identity' and 'logo'. I wish to rectify this.

What is brand? – The perceived emotional corporate image as a whole.
What is identity? – The visual aspects that form part of the overall brand.
What is a logo? – A logo identifies a business in its simplest form via the use of a mark or icon.

To explain this in more detail, let's start at the top – the brand.

What is branding?

Branding is certainly not a light topic – whole publications & hundreds of books have been written on the topic, however to put it in a nutshell you could describe a 'brand' as an organisation, service or product with a 'personality' that is shaped by the perceptions of the audience. On that note, it should also be stated that a designer cannot "make" a brand – only the audience can do this. A designer forms the foundation of the brand.

Many people believe a brand only consists of a few elements – some colours, some fonts, a logo, a slogan and maybe some music added in too. In reality, it is much more complicated than that. You might say that a brand is a 'corporate image'.

The fundamental idea and core concept behind having a 'corporate image' is that everything a company does, everything it owns and everything it produces should reflect the values and aims of the business as a whole.

It is the consistency of this core idea that makes up the company, driving it, showing what it stands for, what it believes in and why they exist. It is not purely some colours, some typefaces, a logo and a slogan.

As an example, let's look at the well known IT company, Apple. Apple as a company, projects a humanistic corporate culture and a strong corporate ethic, one which is characterised by volunteerism, support of good causes & involvement in the community. These values of the business are evident throughout everything they do, from their innovative products and advertising, right through to their customer service. Apple is an emotionally humanist brand that really connects with people – when people buy or use their products or services; they feel part of the brand, like a tribe even. It is this emotional connection that creates their brand – not purely their products and a bite sized logo.

For a more thorough understanding of branding, in simple terms, I recommend Wally Olin's: The Brand Handbook which I quote is "an essential, easy-reference guide to brilliant branding".

What is identity design?

One major role in the 'brand' or 'corporate image' of a company is its identity.

In most cases, identity design is based around the visual devices used within a company, usually assembled within a set of guidelines. These guidelines that make up an identity usually administer how the identity is applied throughout a variety of mediums, using approved colour palettes, fonts, layouts, measurements and so forth. These guidelines ensure that the identity of the company is kept coherent, which in turn, allows the brand as a whole, to be recognisable.

The identity or 'image' of a company is made up of many visual devices:

A Logo (The symbol of the entire identity & brand)
Stationery (Letterhead + business card + envelopes, etc.)
Marketing Collateral (Flyers, brochures, books, websites, etc.)
Products & Packaging (Products sold and the packaging in which they come in)
Apparel Design (Tangible clothing items that are worn by employees)
Signage (Interior & exterior design)
Messages & Actions (Messages conveyed via indirect or direct modes of communication)
Other Communication (Audio, smell, touch, etc.)
Anything visual that represents the business.

All of these things make up an identity and should support the brand as a whole. The logo however, is the corporate identity and brand all wrapped up into one identifiable mark. This mark is the avatar and symbol of the business as a whole.

What is a logo?

To understand what a logo is, we must first understand what it is for.

A logo is for… identification.

A logo identifies a company or product via the use of a mark, flag, symbol or signature. A logo does not sell the company directly nor rarely does it describe a business. Logo's derive their meaning from the quality of the thing it symbolises, not the other way around – logos are there to identity, not to explain. In a nutshell, what a logo means is more important than what it looks like.

To illustrate this concept, think of logos like people. We prefer to be called by our names – James, Dorothy, John – rather than by the confusing and forgettable description of ourselves such as "the guy who always wears pink and has blonde hair". In this same way, a logo should not literally describe what the business does but rather, identify the business in a way that is recognisable and memorable.

It is also important to note that only after a logo becomes familiar, does it function the way it is intended to do much alike how we much must learn people's names to identify them.

The logo identifies a business or product in its simplest form.

It can also be your business name alone, but with the text stylized in a unique way. Your logo could also be a combination of the two – graphic and text. The important thing is that your logo is used the same way every time to identify your products or services – and that it won't be easily confused with an existing logo design (from here on out, a "design" could mean graphics, stylized text, or any combination of the two).

2) Conduct thorough research on your logo.

Your design should be unique enough that it doesn't bear any resemblance to another business's logo – especially one in the same industry as yours. Even if you've made a good faith effort to create a new, original logo, there's still a chance that your design may already be in use and trademarked. Before you get started with the submission stage of the trademark application process, you'll want to conduct some research to make sure that isn't the case. Researching logo trademarks is a little bit different than researching text-only name trademarks – there are more factors to consider, like imagery and stylization. To lend some order to the vast scope of designs that are possible, and to aid in the research process, the USPTO assigns codes to different types of design elements, which you can filter through based on the particulars of your concept. With hundreds of different codes, however, it may prove difficult to conduct as thorough a search as is necessary. As an overall matter, you should strongly consider hiring a trademark attorney to assist with a design search on your logo.

3) Hire a trademark attorney to assist with search and registration process.

The powerful search tools that a trademark attorney will have available are second only to their expertise in navigating the trademark registration pathway in terms of how useful they can be to the layperson attempting to register a logo. A trademark attorney can conduct a more in-depth search than even the tools available through the USPTO website allow for – and moreover, they can assist and advise you in covering all of your bases in terms of potential conflicts. The sheer volume of design elements to cover – even for a relatively simple logo – can quickly become overwhelming. It's better to have the assistance of a trademark attorney before you submit your trademark application, than to find out later that you overlooked something in the early steps.

4) Fill out your trademark application for your logo accurately.

Once you and your trademark attorney have reached a reasonable conclusion that your logo is indeed unique and distinct, it's time to begin the process with the USPTO itself. In filling out your trademark application, you'll need to not only provide the details of your business, but also provide examples of your logo in any way in which it will be used in commerce. The specificity of a logo – colors, orientation of design elements, and so on – means that you'll have to be especially thorough in covering the details of your trademark. You'll also need to demonstrate in which ways the logo will be used – for instance, on a merchandise tag, on a storefront or website, and/or on product packaging. Again, a trademark attorney is a valuable asset to ensure that you fill out your application correctly and completely – and that you don't inadvertently omit logo versions that you'd like to protect. Once you submit your complete and accurate trademark application to the USPTO, your work is done, for a little while. The review process will take six to eight months, typically, as your application makes its way through the submission queue to reach a government examining attorney.

5) Follow through on your successful trademark application.

The examining attorney will conduct their own research to determine that your logo is unique within your industry and product or service offering, and that there's no chance of confusion with any other logo and business already registered – and then, your logo will be successfully registered for a trademark. That means that you're entitled to protection against infringement by any other business under federal jurisdiction, nationwide. Your next steps after successfully trademarking your logo are to use your mark in conjunction with the small circled "R" symbol to signify your registration, and to remain aware of any possible unauthorized uses of your logo.

Have you ever found yourself rushing a file for the printer, but your client hasn't specified a spot color for their design?

Finding a spot color equivalent to CMYK can be difficult. What your client sees is often different from what you see. Here's a quick way to find the Pantone© equivalent for a CMYK process color without the use of a color book. This tip is perfect for designers who need to use professional offset printing.

Method #1: CMYK to Pantone

Step 1

Let's say you get this logo from a designer.

Select the shape highlighted in the following image and focus on the Color panel (Window > Color) to inspect the current fill color. You can see that the orange is made up of 6% cyan, 70% magenta, and 90% yellow. These three colors plus black make for a four-color job. Now, you might want to turn it into a two-color job, and you want that orange to be the same color anytime anybody prints it.

In the following steps, you will learn how to make this change and avoid scrolling through 1,000+ Pantone colors looking for the perfect match.

Make sure that your shape is still selected. To find your perfect Pantone, go to Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork (or click the Recolor Artwork button from the control panel).

In the newly opened dialog box, click the highlighted button to limit the color changes to the color library that you're about to specify. Go to Color Books > PANTONE+ Solid Coated. Looking back at the Color panel, you will see that the orange has been converted into a Pantone, and the Pantone spot color swatch has been added inside the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches).

Step 3

Now, you can select that starburst shape, assign that same Pantone color from the Swatches panel, and lower its tint to about 50%.

So with the black and the Pantone orange, you have a two-color printing job.

Method #2: CMYK to Pantone (Two-Color Job)

Step 1

Select everything in the logo and go to Edit > Edit Color > Recolor with Preset > 2 color. . Choose the PANTONE+ Solid Coated library and click OK to open the Recolor Artwork window. Here you can change the presets if you ever change your mind. This is not the case, so click OK.

Now you can see that the darker orange is the Pantone, the lighter orange is the same Pantone with a 50% tint, and the black is a Pantone process black.
