Autumn 2: This Half Term our topic is Settlement, Trade and Distribution.

We will also be learning about The Isles of Scilly and comparing them to our own local area.

Literacy in Class 6

This half term, our class text will be Why The Whales Came by Michael Morpurgo. As the story is set on The Isles of Scilly, we will also be reading non-fiction texts linked to the south west coast of the UK. Children have already shown a great interest in learning about The Isles of Scilly and we are looking forward to writing our very own Visitor's Guides.

Maths and Fractions

In maths this half term, we will be focusing most of our work on fractions. Children will extend their knowledge of equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and adding and subtracting fractions. Later in the term, we will look at the more challenging methods for multiplying and dividing fractions.

Art and Religious Education

In Class 6, we have been incredibly lucky to receive a visit from a special guest called Jayamini. She spoke to us about the Hindu festival of light called Diwali. Children learned how many Hindu people prepare for the festival and why they celebrate it. To link to our Science topic of 'light' – Jayamini showed us how to create Dot Mandala patterns using different tools. The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning and we hope to take part in similar workshops in the future. Take a look at some of our amazing Dot Mandala patterns below:

Autumn 1: This half term our topic is The Early Islamic Civilisation.

Reading and Writing in Class 6.

In Literacy this half term, we are reading the children's story 'Breadwinner' by Deborah Ellis. It is a gripping adventure story based in Kabul, Afghanistan. The main character is a little girl named 'Parvana' and she creates a clever plan to protect and save her family. In guided groups, we are also be reading 'Oranges in No Man's Land' by Elizabeth Laird. A heart-warming yet thrilling children's story based in the city of Beirut over thirty years ago. In Class 6, our written work is based around our class text, and we will be practicing core grammar skills, as well as writing our very own adventure stories set in different cultures.

Maths and Number Work

For the Autumn term, we are be focusing mainly on place value and the four number operations. We will be re-visiting how to read and write numbers beyond tens of millions, using decimal notation, recognising the value of digits and multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.

Later in the term, we will be learning and refining our formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also be increasing the speed and accuracy of our mental methods as well as developing our reasoning and problem solving skills.

Sport and PE in Class 6

In the Autumn term, our PE lessons will be focused on team games, core skills and strength. All children will need their PE kits in school on a Monday and they should take them home each Friday. To ensure that everyone can take part in PE lessons, it is important that children have the correct Montalbo PE kit, sports trainers and a water bottle. As the weather turns cooler, children may also want to bring a plain coloured jumper, hoodie or fleece. We look forward to starting the new half term with our daily Monty Mile too!

Topic Work

In History this half term, we are learning about the city of Baghdad and how it once evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual centre for the Islamic world. We will be focusing our learning on the famous 'House of Learning' and the ancient network of trade routes called 'The Silk Road'. Did you know that Baghdad was the largest city of the Middle Ages for much of the Abbasid era, peaking at a population of more than a million?

In our Geography work we will be developing our key locational knowledge by identifying and naming the world's countries, using maps to focus on the continent of Asia. We will look in more depth at environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics and major cities of the Asian continent.

Design & Technology and Art & Design

In creative design this term, we will be studying the work of artist M.F Husain. We will be using his bright, modern style to recreate our own paintings based on the Cubism style.

Later in the term, we will be carrying out research on food products and designing our own sweet treats, crafts, decorations and chocolates to sell at the Christmas Fair.

We have a busy and fantastic term ahead!
